Why is the law on the side of criminals in the UK and why would the police not stand up for this couple?

In principal i do agree, however, the gentleman who was released after protecting his home also committed a crminal act which resulted in the 'criminal' suffering brain damage. Two 'wrongs' do not make right. There is no room for ideology in the law.
