Why are quitted, quitting written with double t?

I am a spanish speaker studing english. I know that acording to the rule we r supposed to double the consonant after one vowel on the one-syllable verbs and sometimes on the two-syllable verbs depending on the stress of the word, but i dont se how that applies to quit. Could somebody help me?
