What is the implication of clifying neandertals as Sapiens Neanderthalensis as opposed to .....?

sapiens Neandertalensis implies it is the same species as modern humans. The evidence is that they didn't contribute much if anything to our genome. I prefer the definition of species as being those that normally reproduce and not just have the capability to reproduce. I prefer neanderthalensis and suspect they were different species.
